Cincinnati Reds

The 68-94 record would make the Reds tied for 2nd-worst team in the league, although the pitching staff wouldn’t seem to indicate such a poor performance. Mike Leake showed an elite 2.19 ERA, a slim 29 walks and 126 strikeouts over just 168.2 innings of work. It was Johnny Cueto and acquired Paul Maholm who kept with the team all year long, each pitching 211 innings, had 22 quality starts, ERA’s hovering at 3.10, WHIP at 1.23, 58/59 walks and 18 home runs. Their strikeout totals told two different stories, with Cueto’s 202 being the electric offering. Aroldis Chapman stayed untouchable, with his 1.57 ERA and 75 strikeouts over 57 innings and 55 total saves.

Comparing Joey Votto to second-best offensive offering, Brandon Philips, was just unfair.

Joey Votto: .302/.392/.464/.855, 19 HR, 67 RBI, 63 runs, 33 doubles, 243 TB

Brandon Philips: .260/.317/.375/.692, 10 HR, 55 RBI, 12 SB, 46 runs, 24 doubles, 203 TB

Maybe Philips should have been paying attention to that “MLB Network on-base percentage (stuff),” lest he could help his team perform to a higher standard that Todd Frazier, Billy Hamilton and Jay Bruce are capable of.
