Mid-2014 marked my official foray into the current generation of gaming, and what a fun year to do it! My gaming experiences this year consisted largely of two kinds of games: games with great gameplay, and games with great story. As an adult with my own place and plenty of gamer friends, the highlight of this year was all the games I could play with pals. Many an evening has been spent on my living room couch yelling about red shells and who had the coolest KO.

But there were plenty of private moments too, and lots of tear-jerker endings. Every year, storytellers test games as a medium in new and interesting ways, and I found myself invested in characters this year in ways I didn’t think I could be. Overall, I’m happy with the direction things are headed, though in the coming year my goal is to play a wider variety of games (you’ll notice Nintendo is well-represented on this list).

This is my list of what I personally played, and what I enjoyed the most throughout the entirety of 2014. If you have differing thoughts on any games listed in my Game of the Year list, make sure to leave a well-reasoned argument in the comments section at the end. With that in mind, here is my list for Game of the Year 2014.
