Both defenses played well early in this game, as neither team was able to cross midfield until midway through the second quarter. That ended when the Chiefs abandoned their sputtering running game and let quarterback Alex Smith air the ball out.
Smith completed 82 percent of his passes and threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns. San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick couldn’t match Smith’s productivity, throwing for only 187 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
