Mario Kart 8 Mercedes-Benz DLC Coming in August
Mario Kart 8 has been a smashing success for Nintendo. Despite the fact that the Wii U has been struggling, Mario Kart 8 is on track to sell over 3 million copies, making it the most successful Wii U game to date. Nintendo is looking to capitalize on the game’s success and extend its longevity by releasing an update on August 27th, headlined by three new DLC cars from Mercedes-Benz. Even pre-release it had been known this DLC would eventually come to Japan, but it is now officially making its way to all territories. Mercedes-Benz has put three new cars into the Mario Kart universe: The GLA, the W 25, and the 300 SL roadster. Each of these cars will be fully customizable – however, the GLA will also boast its own exclusive tire options.

This update also provides quite a few quality-of-life updates, including an onscreen map, a personal leaderboard with lifetime coins earned and online win-loss record, and a post-race menu shuffle. Gone are the days of accidentally selecting ‘View Replay’ – ‘Next Race’ is now the default option. There will also be some less visible fixes to improve game stability and online latency. And the best part about all this? It’s free. Check out Nintendo’s teaser trailer below to see all three of the new additions in action.
Nintendo has been hard at work with what appears to be a new media strategy this past year, releasing tasteful (and often free) DLC for several Wii U and 3DS titles. This is not Nintendo’s first collaborative content, either; earlier this year, the company teamed up with golf giant Callaway to put their branded clubs and clothing into Mario Golf: World Tour.
