A German retailer has tweeted thatGrand Theft Auto 5, long rumored to be coming to next gen consoles,will in fact be released for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in June.
Grand Theft Auto Vwould be the latest in a long line of last-gen titles coming to next-gen systems with an shinier coat of paint such asTomb Raider,Rayman Legendsand the recently announced port of TheLast of Usfor PS4.
Some of these ports make at least a little sense. Despite it selling millions, Ubisoft constantly claimedTomb Raiderdidn’t meet sales expectations so I can see squeezing out another version. Barely anybody boughtRaymanso same deal there.TheLast of Uswas a big hit, but there are definitely people who own a PS4 who never owned a PS3.
However, asGrand Theft Auto 5has sold over 30 million copies on last gen, I think any console owners who want it have picked it up by now and thoroughly gotten their enjoyment out of it. A PC release makes sense, especially since the modding community would go nuts on it. A GOTY edition might make more sense, but considering no add-on DLC has been released as of yet, June would seem far too soon for such a release.
Frankly, I’d take this with a very thin grain of salt. Retailers are fairly notorious for just throwing up release dates for stuff with no reason behind it and no confirmation of anything. That being said, I would not be surprised if a next-gen version onGrand Theft Auto 5showed up at some point, just not in the next couple of months.
