Where Is HBO Go On Next Gen?

HBO Go, the companion app for HBO that allows you to watch HBO wherever you may be, is available for nearly every media device there is. From Android phones to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, HBO lovers can have access to their favorite shows any time they choose. However, there are two major devices that are still without the app: Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

We questioned where the app was before, but with Game of Thrones returning this Sunday to HBO, one would assume that Microsoft and Sony would make sure that the HBO Go app would be available on their respective consoles by now. But alas, that doesn’t appear to be the case as there has been no mention of the app coming to either one of the next-gen consoles.

Both HBO and the console companies could have benefited greatly from having the app available on the newest consoles in time for the return of one of the most popular series on TV. Instead, they have missed a golden opportunity to potentially reach a new clientele with their devices.

When we decided to reach out to both Microsoft and Sony for comment on where the app was and when fans could possible see it on their systems, representatives from the companies responded with the following statements.

From Sony:

"“Sony is working on bringing the best in entertainment to the PlayStation 4 in the future, and that includes the HBO Go application. Fans should check our PlayStation blog for updates.”"

From Microsoft:

"“Microsoft is working on adding the HBO Go app to the Xbox One library in the near future.”"

These comments basically rule out that fans will see the app magically appear before Game of Thrones airs on Sunday night. A mid-late year launch still appears to be when the app will find its way to Xbox One. On the other hand, there has been no mention of when to expect the app on the PS4.

Sound off GameSiders! What are your thoughts about not having HBO Go on next-gen consoles yet?
