PS4 Now Costs $449 In Canada

Oh, Canada! It seems that the PS4, being sold in one of the three greatest countries in continental North America, will see its price increased from $399 to $449. This is according to a report in the National Post’s financial section, Financial Post. Additionally, the DualShock 4 and PlayStation Camera devices will go up in price from $59.99 to $64.99, while MLB 14: The Show and Infamous: Second Son will be priced at $69.99. This is in conjunction with what has been going on with PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360 games at EB Games and Best Buy for months, but now complemented with an official comment made by Sony themselves.

"The PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system delivers phenomenal play experiences that will shape the world of games for years to come and has quickly become the next gen console of choice with gamers in Canada. To respond to changes in the market environment, the price of PlayStation 4 will be revised from CAD $399.99 to $449.99 MSRP."

In contrast, Microsoft spoke to the Toronto Sun and said that they have no plans to raise the price of their Xbox One, which has always cost $499 in Canada.

It’s not the first time Canadians have seen higher prices on Sony’s consoles due to a weaker Canadian dollar. Back when the PS3’s details were better revealed at E3 2006, the initial launch price in Canada was $549 for the 20 GB model and $659 for the 60 GB model. That 60 GB price jumped up to $699 in May 2007, not even a year after launch in the country, with an exchange rate that is comparable to today’s.

Without official hardware and software reports going public in Canada, it would be rather difficult to see if the price discrepancy being smaller between the PS4 and Xbox One now will have a noticeable effect on the sales of either console going forward. However, with the cost of video gaming in Canada going up overall, consumers are the ones that lose out.
