N64 HD? It May Happen Sooner Than You Think
If you ever wanted to use your N64 via an HDMI, DVI or VGA signal, your wished may be granted soon enough. The founder of Retroactive, Marshal, has been working on a converter board that will allow you to tinker with your N64 in order to play your favored Nintendo exclusives of the 90’s on a newer HD TV or computer.
There are a great deal of obstacles in the way, however, and is not for the basic user. The N64 HD converter will not be plug-and-play, meaning you will actually have to solder it onto the system yourself. Additionally, it does not handle the audio, meaning you will have the same quality as you would in standard definition. The creator will not offer his services in soldering it to a unit himself, either, but notes that some may choose to purchase from him and resell their N64’s with HDMI, VGA and DVI capabilities.
It is a unique option to play N64 classics that haven’t made it to any virtual console system for either the Wii or Wii U, or if you own neither system. You can sign up for a mailing list at the link above for more information on this project, as it nears a projected release date within Q1 2014.
