Guinness World Records 2014 Gamer’s Edition: Madden NFL Records
With Super Bowl 48 the big talking point in North America this week, we here at Gamesided figured it would be a good time to dabble into the football world for a bit.
Did you think we meant real football? Oh, heavens no! We mean virtual football. More specifically, we mean Madden NFL, and the records set by the players who enjoy living vicariously through a video game like we do. From the largest margin of victory to the biggest prize ever paid out, check out some of these incredible records from the world of Madden NFL courtesy of the Guinness World Records 2014: Gamer’s Edition.
Highest Margin of Victory on Madden NFL 11: The greatest margin of victory on Madden NFL 2011 is 128, by Robert Platek in Rye, New York, USA, on April 10, 2013.
Biggest Prize for an Online Madden Tournament: The biggest open-to-all Madden videogame tournament is the EA Sports Madden Challenge, which had a first prize worth $50,000 in 2009. Eric Wright won the event, which was his second Madden Challenge win in a row. Competitors qualified for the finals of the competition via local tournaments in 18 cities across three countries or via online tournaments on Xbox Live. The winner receives a $25,000 check and a voucher for $25,000 for retailer Best Buy.
First Female Winner of the Madden Bowl Video Game Tournament: The first Madden Bowl took place in 1995. Held every year during the Super Bowl weekend, it features some of the NFL’s top athletes battling it out on the virtual playing field. In February 2011, for Madden Bowl XVII, the competitors used Online Team Play to form groups of three. Among the winning trio was TV presenter Maria Menounos, who triumphed alongside San Francisco 49er Patrick Willis and then Cincinnati Bengal Chad Ochocinco. After over 15 years of the competition, Maria became the first woman to lift the trophy!
First Team on Consecutive Madden NFL Covers: When Barry Sanders became the cover star of Madden NFL 25 (EA Sports, 2013), he secured a double coup for the Detroit Lions. The team’s wide receiver Calvin Johnson Jr had appeared on the cover of Madden NFL 13 (EA Sports, 2012). This marked the first time that the same team or its players had secured consecutive NFL covers.
First Rookie Team to Win the Madden Bowl: On February 2, 2013, former Florida State quarterback E J Manuel former Oregon running-back Kenjon Barner and former Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson made up the first rookie team to win the Madden Bowl in the 19-year history of the videogame tournament.
You can check out these, along with other impressive records, in the Guiness World Records 2014: Gamer’s Edition book which is available now.
