We have may stumbled upon early looks of the Source 2 engine, currently in development by Valve. The above screenshot was posted by a reliable Microsoft insider on the video gaming industry forum NeoGAF, indicating that a Source 2 engine is not only operational, but has enhanced the graphical fidelity of Valve’s Left 4 Dead 2. It is part of a Powerpoint presentation, with each test screenshot slide containing the title, “Valve Confidential.” This informer is as trusted as can be, leaking a ton of Microsoft’s E3 announcements the day before (garbled language to avoid being discovered by higher ups).

The above image does fit into the possibility that Left 4 Dead 3 may be released using the Source 2 engine sometime in the future. It was a few months ago that a Dota II player who toured the Valve offices took a picture of an open email inbox with an email thread indicating both “Source2” and “L4D3.” Additionally, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell indicated to a group of visiting fans that they had been working on new engine stuff, but they had, “Just been waiting for a game to roll it out with.

Left 4 Dead 3 could certainly be a game worthy of rolling out Source 2 engine with, but at the same time an HD Left 4 Dead 2 could be a safe way of testing the grounds of a game engine for internal eyes only. Either way, it’s exciting to see a new Source engine to come out of Valve. Perhaps that was the final roadblock on the way to Half-Life 3?
