Update: Watch Dogs Wii U Pre-Orders No Longer Being Cancelled
UPDATE: The source to Kotaku has notified them that the lack of pre-ordered copies of Watch Dogs on the Wii U in Italy and the US was due to, “A glitch in the system.” The game will be available for pre-order on the Wii U shortly. The fact that Ubisoft declined to respond at inquiry did nothing to help their perceived case, however.
ORIGINAL: It has been so long since the last piece of substantive Watch Dogs news that the hope was bringing a release date or some sort of other form of positivity to readers. Unfortunately, that may not be the case for Wii U owners.
According to a source close and reliable to Kotaku, pre-orders for Watch_Dogs on the Wii U are being cancelled at GameStop stores in the United States. Ubisoft has declined to comment. This follows up on the story that Watch Dogs pre-orders on the Wii U were being cancelled in Italy.
Not that the majority of people who played Watch Dogs would have done so on the Wii U (it is planned to come out on PC, PS3/4, Xbox One and 360). but it still is a really bad sign that Ubisoft would abandon the Wii U platform as a viable third party option. Seeing as Rayman Legends was forced to join other platforms to recuperate development losses and that ZombiU is likely never getting a sequel due to lack of financial success, news like this would indicate the publisher may be on the outs with Nintendo.
This is all speculation until we hear confirmation from Ubisoft, but it does fit in with the idea that the Wii U is slowly becoming a first party device. There are still excellent titles coming out on the Wii U this year, but it appears Watch Dogs may not be one of them. Hopefully it is just a misunderstanding. We will be on the lookout for more information about this story as it develops.
