Nintendo Direct: NES Remix Announced For Nintendo Wii U eShop

NES Remix is one of the coolest ideas to come out of Nintendo Direct. Taking place over a dozen Nintendo Entertainment System games, these classics are retooled with a focus on completing challenges. For example, you could be playing the Donkey Kong arcade game as Link, Excitebike at night with only the high beams to guide you or Super Mario in reverse.

Any time a classic is tampered with there will be some initial call to respect what it was. However, changing how the classics are played in a challenge-based system is a brilliant idea. It takes the fun of discovering old secrets (like knocking the Koopa shell and jumping on it repeatedly for lives in Mario) into things to aspire to beat. Plus, it is a great way to get young people to play the games that made Nintendo what they are.

NES Remix is out today on the Nintendo Wii U’s eShop.
