Super Mario 3D World Also Launches To Poor Sales In Japan

Seriously, what is going on in Japan? First it was the news that Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII debuted to the weakest sales numbers within that 3-part series, now comes news that Super Mario 3D World has also released to relatively-weak sales in its home country.

According to the Famitsu sales numbers for November 18 – 24, Super Mario 3D World opened its launch selling 106,967 units. That makes Super Mario 3D World’s launch the weakest in the history of 3D Mario games.

This is terrible news for Nintendo as they desperately try to sell more and more Wii U units. We at GameSided loved Super Mario 3D World, as did many other reviewers here in North America, so it is a bit of a shock to see the sales numbers in Japan so low.

While Nintendo will be doing more than fine with its continually-impressive sales of the Nintendo 3DS worldwide, it is only a matter of time before the PS4 releases in Japan (on February 22, 2014, no less). The company has tried everything to make the Wii U successful, yet the exclusive releases of The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, ZombiU, Wii Fit and Wii Party, plus a price drop has not given the Wii’s successor that much-needed consistent push in hardware sales.

Perhaps as the console develops more and more big titles, maybe then the sales of Super Mario 3D World will spike in Japan. Until then, this news remains a head-scratcher.
