Extinction Mode For Call of Duty: Ghosts Officially Revealed (Video)

It had been rumored for weeks. There were even trophies leaked that reflected the possibility. Now, Activation has confirmed that Call of Duty: Ghosts will feature a brand new gameplay mode called “Extinction.

From what it appears to be in the trailer, Extinction Mode is a 4-player co-op mode in which you and a team of friends/strangers destroy clusters of aliens hives as oncoming waves of monsters flank you and your teammates. Perimeter protection afforded to players includes electrical fences, stationed turrets, tactical missile airstrikes, miniguns, lighting gasoline on fire, flying sentries and helicopter support.

Call of Duty: Ghost’s Extinction Mode looks to escalate upon a heightened sense of urgency that comes with Treyarch’s Call of Duty zombies. Instead, by making the swarm enemy aliens you have opponents that can jump, spew acid and run very fast. In turn, it looks to require a greater deal of strategy when it comes to defending your bases of operation.

The trailer also suggests that there can be a finite ending to this mode. The goal apparently will be to destroy the hives, place a nuke in the center of the infestation and get the hell out of there (a shot includes the team running for a helicopter near the end of the video). It will be interesting to see how Infinity Ward plans on making the mode replayable, but don’t be surprised if it involves DLC packs with additional maps.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be released on the PS3, Wii U, PC and Xbox 360 on November 5th, with PS4 and Xbox One versions released in the weeks ahead. Check out the Extinction Mode trailer below.
