Pokemon X & Y Sells 4 Million Copies During Opening Weekend
With the release of Pokemon X & Y, Nintendo did something they never did in the 17-year history of the popular game: they released it world-wide at the same time. The two new Pokemon titles hit store shelves and digital marketplaces on October 12, and were met with immediate success.
According to the Japan-based company, Pokemon sold more than four million copies across Japan, Europe and the Americas in its first weekend on the market.
“The early response to Pokemon X and Pokemon Y not only reaffirms the ongoing passion of Pokemon fans, but also indicates that an entirely new generation of gamers are eager to experience the franchise for themselves,” said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said via a company press release.
With the success of the sales, Pokemon X & Y has become the fastest-selling 3DS title of all time when regional data is combined and compared. The sales of the new games are already up 70% on Pokemon Black 2 and White 2.
To compare it with other past Pokemon titles, Nintendo also released sales figures for the RPG franchise since 2002.
Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl — $17.63 Million
Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire — $16.22 Million
Pokemon Black and Pokemon White — $15.42 Million
Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver — $12.67 Million
Pokemon FireRed and Pokemon LeafGreen — $12 Million
