7. Grand Theft Auto

The game that started it all; Grand Theft Auto was the basest that the series got. It was three levels of straight-up shooting violence, taking place over three different cities; Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City. It even had 4 playable female characters, even if it was a simple palette swap.

The game is also probably the basis for all of the series’ controversies, as back then you scored more points by killing as many people as you could. That included innocent civilians into the fray, although it was hard to tell with the sub par graphics. Additionally, you could only save after completing one of the cities, a huge complaint of mine. What it did best was allow the ease of freedom to explore each level how you wanted, including its missions. It is a great start to the series, however.
