Sony Planning PS4 Virtual Reality Headset Reveal At Tokyo Game Show
Sony planning a VR device for gaming, similar to the device below.
Sony has always been searching for its true killer app, and they may have just created it. Sources to ComputerAndVideoGames suggest that Sony will reveal a head-mounted virtual reality display device at the Tokyo Game Show later this September. The device is being created to work on the PlayStation 4 and will inherently act as the main competitor to the Oculus Rift.
You can’t have the tech without people working on compatible games. That’s why it is also rumored that Evolution Studios, the creators of the upcoming PS4 title DriveClub, are working with the Sony device to create a cockpit view of their game. The view would allow you to immerse yourself into the game environment using the VR headset.
If this turns out to be true, it could potentially be an amazing get for Sony and the PlayStation 4. The biggest question, however, is what support will this device get? It is a huge risk for game developers to create something on a potentially-expensive device like a virtual reality headset and see consumers not even buy the device, let alone their developed games. Just like with PlayStation Move and Kinect 1.0, if the home console doesn’t require the device to be bought it will be difficult to see as huge an install base for your games.
The biggest difference, personally, is that virtual reality has been sought after in gaming for many years. There is an allure to becoming one with the gaming world, to let all your worries fly away. The demand for such a device might be high enough to warrant developers and publishers to create content for such a device. Sony may have the advantage over the Oculus Rift, despite being behind in public awareness or production, due to their relationships with game creators.
It’s all up in the air right now. Tokyo Game Show will begin September 19th and run through to the 22nd. More information about the VR headset should be revealed heading up to the conference.
