3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

There is absolutely no denying what Call of Duty: Modern Warfare did for the first-person shooter genre in the gaming industry. Before COD 4, there was team deathmatch, and maybe a couple other game modes in online shooters. They were all basic, bare-bones games that didn’t really give players much incentive to keep playing after a couple of months.

That all changed in 2007 when Modern Warfare was released.

Infinity Ward and Activision gave players over 10 different game modes, kill streaks, a ranking system, and in-depth custom classes among other features. It made the replay value of the game far greater than any shooter up to that point, and became the bar that other shooters had to reach, and surpass, in order to be viewed as a successful game.

Plus, the gameplay wasn’t all that bad either as the development team took a big risk by leaving the standard World War II era, and fast forwarding it over 60 years. It was a plan that paid off, and changed the landscape of FPS titles for years to come.
