Mark Cerny Sits Down To Talk About Knack On PS4 (Video)
Don’t adjust your language options on Youtube, that’s actually PlayStation 4 architect and game director Mark Cerny speaking fluent Japanese (and, later, English) when talking about his upcoming PlayStation 4 launch title Knack.
As part of PlayStation’s “Conversations with Creators” series, Mark Cerny describes in depth more about the game’s environments and how it can affect the playable character of Knack. As Knack starts out small and with only a few number of parts, the more he destroys the bigger he becomes, to the point of “overwhelming the enemy.” As your character gains more parts, like melting ice or when wooden parts that are burning with fire, those affected parts dynamically change how Knack fights in combat.
Cerny also tells viewers the two target audiences he is trying to attain for his upcoming title. The first is the fans of Crash Bandicoot or Jak and Daxter; two difficult games that fans enjoyed supremely. The second audience is for entry-level users and children, with a focus on making easy difficulty an experience that is both fun and easy enough not to discourage users who are not used to playing with controllers that have 16 buttons on them.
In fact, Knack producer Yusuke Watanabe states that he created a DualShock 3 controller about 1.5 times its regular size with the help of a 3D printer to better understand how it is for a child to play with the controller. Doing so allowed him to tinker with the button control placement to allow younger users easier playability with Sony’s controllers when playing their game.
