Best Party/Social Game – Rock Band 3

The music gaming scene’s glory days are behind us, but there is no taking back the excellence that is the Rock Band series. Harmonix, the team responsible for Guitar Hero 1 and 2, really brought their A-game when they came up with their final edition in Rock Band 3.

There was a lot of new additions in this game. Not only were we introduced to a keyboard peripheral and fuller drumming symbols support, but we also had the option to plug in a real electric guitar and play a multitude of songs. The gap between make believe and reality was bridged, as with pro mode you could play the drums, guitar, bass and piano keys note for note to the song’s actual tablature. Playing Yes’ “Roundabout” on Pro Mode Expert bass/piano/drums/voice combination? Pull it off well? You might as well make your own band.

And that’s why the game is so damn near perfect. The developers’ love for music (and its weekly song DLC that lasted many years), combined with the variance of the songs’ genres and time periods, plus the tools provided by the game to teach you how to play these instruments make Rock Band 3 an authentic music gaming experience.
