Best Strategy Game – XCOM: Enemy Unknown
There are not that many games that can qualify as strategic in nature this generation. Nevertheless, XCOM: Enemy Unknown’s turn-based alien strategy game was a legitimate claim to the genre’s throne.
XCOM, despite being futuristic, plays along tried and true methods of strategy gaming. You play as a commander of an elite special forces group, with each character following your lead. Fog of War protects both your enemies from their plans being uncovered, as they start in randomly-generated locations. You typically must defeat your opponents or extract key targets to accomplish your goal, allowing you to upgrade/customize your characters and tinker with your base of operations.
The game’s online play is what brings XCOM: Enemy Unknown to a more competitive level. You only have a certain amount of money to create a team specifically to defeat your online friends and enemies. These teams can be comprised of humans and aliens, meaning it’s up to your imagination how to balance your team perfectly.
The replayability, the steep but rewarding learning curve and a lot of variety in the top difficulty levels are just some of the plethora of things that make XCOM such a great strategy game.
