Spelunky Launches For PS3, PS Vita Today

Fans of the indie action adventure game Spelunky can expect to see the game available for sale on the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita today. The game will become available in Europe on August 28th.

Releasing through the PlayStation Network at $14.99 and $11.99 for PlayStation Plus, Spelunky is a treasure hunting platformer with a very Roguelike-like element. That is, it specializes in random dungeon generation and permanent death without relying on roguelike turn-based movements and 2D/ASCII tiling. It’s an indie game developed by Derek Yu and Andy Hull in which you play an Indiana Jones-esque spelunker searching for treasure, avoiding traps, destroying enemies and saving the damsel in distress for added rewards. You can play as numerous male and female characters, plus you can switch out the red dress-wearing damsel with a Chippendale-like dude or a cute little pug.

A large part of the replayability of Spelunky comes in the daily challenge mode, which is only available on Steam at the moment, unfortunately (you can voice your opinions on the developer’s Twitter account). Each day a randomly-created challenge is released. The more gold you acquire and the better you play each day, the higher you can rank on the worldwide daily leaderboard. Be careful, though, as if you die you cannot try again and your score is recorded for that day.
