The Evolution Championship Series (Evo) will guarantee to provide the hypest moments in fighting games tournament play year in and year out. The most iconic moment, however, happened all the way back in 2004. Diago “The Beast” Umehara faced off against Justin Wong in a fateful Semifinal match. The winner was headed to the finals, with the loser heading over to the loser’s bracket to stave off complete elimination. Diago, the more capable Street Fighter player, was put on the ropes by the reigning Marvel vs. Capcom 2 champ. The Beast was chipped down to a sliver of health and Justin planned to end the match with a Chun Li Super combo.

That’s where everything went bananas.

You see, there are a slight amount of frames (2-3) in which a player can parry a hit during a flurry of combo hits. Diago parried the entirety of Justin’s Chun Li Super barrage. All 16 hits attempted, with 3 sets of movements used to juxtapose the timing. While Justin was button spamming to create as much noise as possible to knock his opponent off his game. With tournament life hanging in the balance, Diago overcame all odds, denied his death and returned with a combo of his own, defeating Justin for the match and immortalizing the impressive gaming moment for all time.
