Thief Will Be Released On February 25, 2014
Eidos Montréal, the studio behind the modern development of the Deux Ex series, has released the gamescom trailer for their upcoming title “Thief” ahead of next week’s conference. In the trailer they reveal the game’s launch date of February 25, 2014.
Initially announced all the way back in 2009, the development of Thief has gone under fire over the years. Voice actor Stephen Russell, who has voiced the protagonist Garrett since the series’ inception back in 1998, has been replaced for the upcoming title. The reasoning was that “the actor playing Garrett needed to be able to perform his own stunts,” something you would never hear from in a Hollywood movie. The result was petitions requesting Eidos Montréal to bring Stephen back.
Furthermore, the upcoming Thief title will incorporate less stealth mechanics than in the series’ previous titles. In fact, you can no longer jump at free will. The defense of this, made by Thief lead level designer William Schmidt, was that “jumping, bouncing up and down, kind of broke the immersion … We didn’t want you to be the master thief and you just tend to fall off stuff all the time.”
Regardless, fans of the series who have been looking for more of an action-based adventure shall look no further than towards Thief. The game will be released on current and next-gen Sony, Microsoft and PC devices on February 25, 2014.
