The GTA series has always been lacking in its online development. Not nearly as much time and effort that has been put into the series’ story and gameplay has been transferred to the multiplayer department. Today that changes, as Rockstar Games has introduced Grand Theft Auto Online.

The new online option gives you much more in terms of things to do. You can explore the entire Los Santos world by yourself and roam freely or you can join up with friends and other online players to create your own crew. From there you can perform jobs, bank heists, complete missions all for money and reputation, or just hang out and pull off sweet team-building tandem skydives. Whatever you can do alone in single player you can do with up to 16 total players at a time in Grand Theft Auto Online.

In fact, you might be able to do even more. The gameplay video featured playable female characters, meaning for the first time in the Grand Theft Auto series you can play as, compete, pull off missions and more as a female character. It’s a sigh of relief for those who have been asking Rockstar of this request since Grand Theft Auto III.

Rockstar appears to be committed to pulling off Grand Theft Auto Online successfully for a long time. Not only can you create your own races and deathmatch maps for you and others to play and compete in, but the online world will reportedly “constantly grow and change as new content is added.” Whether it is through DLC or constant updates is up to the developers, but what they’ve done with their online capabilities means that it will no longer be an afterthought.

Grand Theft Auto Online comes free as an October 1st download to all those that purchase Grand Theft Auto V, which releases for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17th later this year.
