9. Final Fantasy III

This was the final NES game of the series, and was released initially only in Japan. It took more than sixteen years to reach North America in the form of a Nintendo DS port, but it was available in a fan-translated NES ROM for some years before it made its official port over here.

Luneth and the rest of the Onion Knights try to restore balance to the world by defeating the evil below the floating continent. They strayed from the gameplay style of II and returned to its roots, but with new additions. Instead of being stuck in a specific class for the entire game, Final Fantasy III brought a job class system, one that would become infamous for its innovation to the RPG.

This was a huge gamechanger for Square. The customization of each character as it learned more abilities from different jobs allowed the player to bring a new level of play that was rare to find in an 8 bit game. The story is a bit cookie cutter (restoring balance after some sort of evil bad guy breaking it), but there are few qualms to make. It may be a very old game, but don’t let that stop you from purchasing one of the biggest titles for the Ouya.
