Tomb Raider Sequel Confirmed Despite Sales Target
A next generation follow-up to the critically acclaimed Tomb Raider retelling has been officially confirmed according to Square Enix CEO Phil Rogers.
In the open letter written for fans, Rogers described the game as already “well into development”.
The update follows the news that Square Enix viewed Tomb Raider with disappointing sales results, despite the game being well received by practically every reputable gaming reviewer.
Square Enix’s mixed response was documented in a recent financial statement:
"However, we were very disappointed to see that the high scores did not translate to actual sales performance, which is where we see the substantial variance in operation profit/loss against the forecast."
After a lack of a DLC to either extend or add to Laura Croft’s recent adventure, it was announced at this year’s Comic-Con that comic book writer Gail Simone would be penning a series to continue the rebooted storyline. Additionally, it was revealed the books would tie directly into a sequel game.
Though it will be awhile before details of the sequel are revealed, Simone did let fans know how she plans to approach the character in her comics.
"“The way I see Lara now is, she’s not after treasure. She’s not really after thrills. She’s a questioner, she’s an explorer. She wants answers,” Simone is quoted as saying. “The thing is, she’s completely unstoppable. That’s what I love. Everyone underestimates her, and that is a terrible mistake to make."
The comic is expected to release February 26, 2014.
