Pachter Asks: “Why Would Anyone Buy A Wii U?”

It’s pretty clear that the Wii U is not doing that well so far. While a price cut may help change Nintendo’s fortunes, gaming industry research analyst Michael Pachter seems to think purchasing a Wii U at this time doesn’t make much sense in this News10/KXTV interview.

"The publishers are pretty excited to support the Xbox One and the PS4 – they really didn’t say anything about the Wii U. And we know EA has no games in development for Wii U. If Activision pulls support; if you see Ubisoft , you see Take-Two pull support, the Wii U is a Nintendo-only gaming device which is what they were back with the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985. They’re not going to sell a lot of consoles if they don’t have games like FIFA and Battlefield and Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto… Why would anybody buy a Wii U?"

While Pachter does have a point when it comes to 3rd party publishers, the industry expert has been known to make wildly incorrect predictions in the past. The problem is that there aren’t many people whose job is to look closely into the market research (NPD), and Pachter is the most reliable we’ve got.

The 2nd quarter has come to a close, and hopefully we’ll see some reported hardware and software data from Nintendo within the month. Then we’ll see just how much trouble the Wii U is truly in.
