Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor Gameplay Shows Weapon Customization

It’s always interesting to see mythical video game takes on non-established canon, and if Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is any indication, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment wants to bring a solid interpretation of the gap between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Their recently-released weapons and runes trailer shows exactly how players can modify and upgrade their equipment with an odd twist.

As is typical in an action-RPG, Shadow of Mordor allows players to customize the protagonist Talion’s main arsenal; sword, bow and dagger. Depending on how you take out your enemies (exploiting their weaknesses, performing certain kill types), you can influence the type of runes dropped as loot. These runes will add buffs to your weapons.

Epic runes are the rare, top-quality runes that are dropped in a certain particular fashion. You must capture a high-level enemy, affect his mind to send a high-ranking war chief a death threat so that he carries an entourage of enemies. Defeating the war chief will then force an Epic rune drop, which carries a wide variety of impressive benefits.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will be released on October 7th later this year on the PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360.
