MapleStory 2 Announced, Now A 3D MMORPG

Nexon, the development and publishing company responsible for many successful MMORPG’s, has announced MapleStory 2. According to MMOSite, the sequel to the popular 2D, side-scrolling MMO will open beta testing in 2014. Additionally, MapleStory 2 will see itself be turned into a 3D game within the same universe as the original, with unique gameplay mechanics.

Changing up from a side-scroller will make creating a hit sequel that much tougher, especially being produced in the harsh environment that is the free-to-play MMORPG world. MapleStory, despite its criticisms, brought something else to the table in its game engine and play style, and being in 2D sure helped to make that successful.

Sometimes, it is best to try not to fix what isn’t broken. Ragnarok Online comes to mind as an example. Yes, the 2.5D overhead style looks outdated today, but polishing up the graphics and adapting beyond what you have should retain interest in the brand. Otherwise, you have a creation like Ragnarok Online 2, which looks like your run-of-the-mill Korean MMORPG in comparison.

MapleStory 2 will be entering beta testing in 2014. We will keep up with the developments here at GameSided, so follow us on Twitter to stay up to date!
