Mega Man-Inspired Mighty No. 9 Meets Its Kickstarter Goal

Keiji Inafune and the team at comcept USA launched a Kickstarter campaign on August 31 to bring Mighty No. 9 to life. It is a video game concept developed for PC with the side-scrolling action style of Mega Man in mind, with many former Mega Man staffers on the team (including a level designer, composer, artist, game developer, etc.). With more than 29 days to go, Mighty No. 9 has already reached its Kickstarter goal and the project has been funded.

Any extra money given to the project will fund the stretch goals provided by the development team. So far those include additional stages, Mac/Linux versions of the game, New Game + and Turbo modes, a Making-Of documentary and a PS3/Xbox 360/Wii U version of the game all the way at $2.5 million in funding. There are also two stretch goals between its current funding and the cap that are a mystery at the moment, with more info coming soon.

It seems odd that the Mighty No. 9 team at comcept USA wouldn’t create a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version of the game, seeing as both consoles use the similar x86 architecture that PC’s run on. According to an interview with Joystiq at PAX Prime, project lead Inafune said, “One of the clearest reasons is that the developer, who is developing the core of the production, is Inti Creates, and they’re not familiar with next-gen.”

It is a bummer for those who plan to buy next-gen consoles in the launch window, but perhaps with so many people funding the project with almost a month to go (over $40,000 extra was pledged during the time this article was written), a PS4 or Xbox One option should become more viable down the line.

Mighty No. 9 will now be coming to Steam on PC’s with an estimated launch of April 2015. Expect that date to be flexible, as production and development setbacks are likely to occur down the line. The announcement trailer is available for viewing below.
