Divinity: Original Sin 2 Announced, Kickstarter Coming

Divinity: Original Sin, it turns out, carved a marvelous name for itself within the RPG gaming scene. Originally started as a Kickstarter project, then released early through Steam’s Early Access program, and finally releasing full to close out the first half of 2014. With a console release coming later this year being handled by a publisher, there’s not much more for Larian Studios to do but to march forward. And so they have today, with the announcement that Divinity: Original Sin 2 is scheduled for development.

Despite massive success and future console sales in partnership with Focus Home Interactive, Divinity: Original Sin 2 will be yet another Kickstarter project. Launching August 26th, the project will look to carry on the story laid down as part of the original game it sequels.

“Divinity: Original Sin 2 builds further on the foundations we’ve been laying with Divinity: Original Sin (D: OS), and Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition (D: OS EE),” Swen Vincke of Larian Studios writes. “For us, this allows for an unprecedented focus on the gameplay. We won’t be ‘losing time’ building the elementary systems that typically take up more than 60% of our development time. Instead, we can start building the world immediately and try out all kinds of things.

“Put simply, if you were to compare what we’re doing to what Bioware did back in the day with Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2, (Divinity: Original Sin 2) is to be our Baldur’s Gate 2 — building further on our equivalent of Baldur’s Gate; D:OS.”

Right now, Larian Studios are asking their fans for ideas as to what kind of Kickstarter pledge rewards the Divinity: Original Sin 2 campaign should carry. Suggests are open to the community for voting, tagging and comment by all. Again, we’ll know more about the scope of the project once the Kickstarter launches later this year, including what platform(s) the game might be carried on.
