Updated: Dawngate Canceled Six Months Into Open Beta

Update: According to Matt Bromberg’s post on the Dawngate website, Dawngate’s cancellation is due to the fact that EA did not see enough progress as the game developed:

"Whenever we begin a game project, we do so with great hopes and expectations. In this case, we chose to enter a new genre for EA in MOBA, one that we knew going in was extremely competitive. We built a game in Dawngate that wasn’t simply a clone of existing MOBAs, but one that truly pushed the genre forward in many ways. Dawngate has been in beta for almost 18 months, including a full open beta for the past six months. Through that time, we’ve taken a lot of feedback from players and delivered lots of new features and innovations. And although the game has grown, we’re not seeing the progress we’d hoped for. This isn’t the outcome we wanted, but beta testing is about learning and improving, and ultimately, about making difficult decisions about how to proceed."

The open beta will continue for the next 90 days, and full refunds for any real money spent in game will be processed within the next 10. According to GameInformer, Waystone Games, the developing team that was working on Dawngate, has been disbanded. EA stated that they will do their best to disperse the team to other parts of EA.

It’s sad that EA’s foray into the MOBA genre ended so suddenly and sadly, but hopefully this experience allows them to, in the long run, develop even better games.

Original Post:

According to Polygon, EA’s upcoming MOBA, Dawngate, has been canceled six months into its open beta.

The news seems to have come from a post on the Dawngate website, that was also retweeted by the official Dawngate Twitter feed. Currently, the news post is not viewable by most users on the Dawngate website, likely due to heavy traffic, so details are not yet clear, though Polygon reports that those who spent money during the beta will receive refunds.

Dawngate received quite a bit of hype at this year’s E3, and featured an extensive gameplay demo at Gamescom. It was said to be unique from other MOBAs in its highly choice-based system where the player’s particular style was encouraged over trying to fit a pre-conceived mold of a character type.

We will update this article as more news becomes available as to why the game was canceled, or other concrete details on how this will affect beta testers.
