Toadette Confirmed For Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

With the great news that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will receive a 2014 release this December, Nintendo decided to follow it up with even more great news. Toadette has been confirmed to appear, even becoming playable as the game progresses. As much has been made clear in the above gameplay trailer, one that reveals just how exactly the Super Mario 3D World minigame has evolved over the course of its own standalone project.

In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, the Mario universe standard opens up the story, with Captain Toad and Toadette searching for treasure. Upon finding a Power Star, suddenly a giant bird named Wingo swoops in to take it away, with Toadette along with it. It’s up to you as Captain Toad to bring them both back. It’s certainly not uncharted waters for Nintendo, but the focus quickly shifts back to where it belongs and is at its strongest: the gameplay.

Besides the traditional no-jump-based movement and the camera-angle-moving commands, new gameplay mechanics come into focus. You can pluck and throw vegetables to throw at enemies, use a pickaxe to break away at blocks, eat double cherries to advance in puzzles and much more. There are even a good amount of controls that require the GamePad, mostly for the purpose of removing objects impeding your progress. Plus, there are a great number of locales to visit that change up both the pace of movement as well as platforming style.

When I played a demo of Captain Toad earlier this year, I had but a small taste of likely one of the very first levels, which played very much like a map level in Super Mario 3D World. Seeing this trailer, however, instills a grander idea for the game, one that expands upon its geographically-based puzzle mechanics. With over 70 stages to play in, it seems like the game will be a great holiday complement to the Wii U’s other notable offering in November; Super Smash Bros.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will be released exclusively for the Wii U on December 5th at a MSRP of $39.99.
