In an effort to make sure that those planning to buy an Xbox One or a PS4 in the future aren’t avoiding purchasing their game in preparation, Activision is offering a completely free upgrade from the last gen versions of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. As explained at Joystiq, those who buy the digital download version of the futuristic FPS title on PS3 will be able to upgrade to a PS4 version for free. The same goes with the digital Xbox 360 version being able to be upgraded to new Xbox One users for free. The offer does not extend to physical copies, and it seems to be confirmed only for North American audiences.

As the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare website goes into detail, the free upgrade extends to just beyond the digital base game. The offer also includes transferring season passes, plus all additional digital content that is purchased on either the PS3 or Xbox 360 version going to the next console in each respective company’s family console line. You cannot get this offer with an Xbox 360 upgrade for a PS4, and the offer expires on March 31st, 2015.

In the past, it was publishers who were offering small fees to transfer licences of games to the next-gen console. For Activision to foot the bill and take on the potential financial losses in order to guarantee an easier console transition is a sign of good faith. That, or they want to ensure the sales difference from Ghosts to Advanced Warfare isn’t that noticeable. Hopefully, though, we start seeing a lot more focus purely on next-gen titles with no more ports to the Xbox 360 and PS3. It is only then when development is not tailored for 512 MB RAM consoles in mind that we will start to see stark jumps in graphical and gaming programming improvements.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be released on November 4th for the PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360. Pre-ordering the game can get you access to the Day Zero Edition, which gets you into the action a day earlier.
