OlliOlli2 Skates Onto PS4, PS Vita Next Year

One of the surprise hits to be released this year was OlliOlli for the PS Vita. The little-known roll7 studio benefitted from coming out in a release-light January, as the quality of their skateboard game was able to shine amid a lack of competition. Now that they have established themselves, Sony is able to be more confident in letting the company do what they do. Their decision, as announced on the PlayStation Blog, is to make a sequel called OlliOlli2. It will be released in 2015 on the PS4 and PS Vita.

More from News

OlliOlli2 is expected to bring new features to the series. Such improvements include expanding upon the game’s combo system, especially with the addition of manuals, reverts, revert manuals, and grind switching, as well as adding new tricks to the Tricktionary that provide more variety. Plus, with levels splitting off into multiple routes, there’s just an added layer of replayability to the game beyond trying to optimize trick segments. Finally, “Combo Rush” mode allows up to 4 players at a time race in a level and pull off tricks within a time limit.

Although Sony has never had real success with the PS Vita, with roll7 developing for the PS4 in mind as well OlliOlli2 is opened up to more gameplay possibilities. Not only will a larger audience have access to the game from launch, but the multiplayer opportunities provided mean that there’s a space for the series to evolve over time. With a lack of proper Tony Hawk video games the last while, the skateboarding game sub-genre has sagged. I’m glad to see roll7 bring back the luster, and to see a sequel drop about a year later.

OlliOlli2 will be released on the PS4 and PS Vita in 2015.
