NPD July 2014: Last of Us Sells 2: Electric Boogaloo

Each month industry experts are given a report that details all of the consoles and software numbers sold from physical retail brick-and-mortar stores within the United States, which are then reported on by sites privileged with that sort of information. They are published from the NPD group, with this month’s numbers reporting for NPD July 2014.

Top 10 most sold physical software titles in the US, according to NPD July 2014 numbers (bracket order=most-to-least sold version):

  • 1. The Last of Us Remastered (PS4, PS3)
  • 2. Minecraft (360, PS3)
  • 3. FIFA 14 (360,PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Vita)
  • 4. Watch Dogs (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
  • 5. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
  • 6. Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox One, 360, PS4, PS3, Wii U, PC)
  • 7. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
  • 8. Sniper Elite III (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  • 9. NBA 2K14 (360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  • 10. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (360, PS3, 3DS, DS, PS4, Wii U, Xbox One, Vita, PC)

As he is prone to do, Geoff Keighley took to Twitter to reveal more info about the NPD July 2014 numbers, including the fact that the PS4 was the #1 best selling console for the month. That puts them in first place for the 7th consecutive month. Additionally, he broke early the fact that The Last of Us: Remastered took the #1 most units sold spot.

Meanwhile, Nintendo pushed early out the fact that Mario Kart 8 has sold more than 1 million units in the US alone. Beyond that, Nintendo revealed that since that the first 7 months of 2014 saw a 60 percent increase of Wii U hardware sales over the first 7 months of 2014, with the same comparison for Wii U software sales seeing a 135 percent increase. Finally, Nintendo 3DS software has reached 40 million total in the US throughout its lifetime.

The Last of Us Remastered port coming in at number 1 for a month, with only five days worth of sales counted, would normally be a feat worth of extreme appreciation, were it not for the fact that July saw no worth competitor be released within the same timeframe. With many people going on vacation throughout the summer months, plus with convention season kicking into full gear, it’s hard to generate as much sales interest as one could during the holiday season.

More from 3DS

Just look at all of the Top 10 NPD July 2014 games; all but TLoU and Sniper Elite III were released several months prior. In fact, more than half of the list came out in 2013, initially. It’s a slow sales month, but that means it’s a perfect time to catch up on classics or your gaming backlog. It’s when September and October roll around when we start getting intriguing reports, like how well everything will rank second to the Destiny pre-order hype train (if reports are to be believed).
