As revealed in a Nintendo press release, Mario Kart 8 has surpassed 1 million units sold to consumers within the United States alone. It becomes the second Wii U game to cross the 1 million threshold, as New Super Mario Bros U still sits atop the Nintendo Wii U throne at 1.69 million.

Even though the Nintendo Wii U has not taken off yet financially, as much as Nintendo would have hoped, the success of Mario Kart 8 shows that Nintendo can drive sales and get the ball rolling with just one game, as Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has said in the past. Mario Kart 8 is the game that got me to pick up the console in the first place, and has been a staple for couch co-op and online multiplayer play in a house that doesn’t enjoy the banalities of online shooters.

With the overwhelming (relatively) success of Mario Kart 8 and its momentum-driving ability to sell Wii U consoles in a general fashion (more on that soon, as the NDP results for July 2014 drop), is the Wii U almost ready to bust out an upward trend in sales? If Super Smash Bros for Wii U doesn’t do it, does it mean a wait for Zelda on Wii U before we see a noticeable sales increase? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
