Assassin’s Creed Unity Trailer Mixes New Tech, Old Buzzwords

It looks like Ubisoft will begin to get into the nitty-gritty about gameplay and programming details surrounding Assassin’s Creed Unity, as they have released a new trailer in a suggest series highlighting the creation of their first next-gen-and-PC-only open-world title. While some of the tech involved in creating the game is truly intriguing, it was met with equally-displeasing marketing buzzwords.

Right off the bat, we get confirmation of a new game engine in Assassin’s Creed Unity. Due to the fact that Ubisoft doesn’t have to worry about last-gen hardware limitations, this is great news to hear, even if it to create an “immersive” experience that “revolutionizes” new-gen technologies. The blossoming of volumetric lighting and fog gives a very surreal look to 18th Century Paris, especially telling among the near 1:1-scaled buildings that fill up the landscape. The new engine also allows for more realistic NPC’s, boasting thousands of characters like kings and paupers.

The combat in Assassin’s Creed Unity still looks to contain more of the same unrealistic blind parries from previous games, but overall the addition of co-op play is still what makes me think that the game could be somewhat different from the usual annualization of the series. It’s hard to retain optimism for the series, especially since the core of the gameplay looks to remain the same year in and out, but hopefully adding three other characters to your adventure could prove to add both story and gameplay layers onto a reliable base.

Assassin’s Creed Unity will be released for the PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 28th.
