Nintendo Reveals Super Smash Bros 3DS Tournament For SDCC 2014

With Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS coming out on October 3, it seems odd that most of the tournament and general gameplay footage has been shown to the public on the Wii U version. Nintendo aims to remedy that, as a press release sent out today indicates that they will hold an open tournament for the 3DS version of the game at San Diego Comic-Con 2014, specifically on July 25th.

From the release:

"Starting at noon, there will be a preliminary round in which groups of four competitors battle it out, with the winner advancing. During the finals, players will duke it out one-on-one to determine the top smasher. Tournament slots are limited, and fans will be able to sign up the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis."

More from 3DS

Don’t worry if you’re one of the billions of people who won’t be attending one of the biggest conventions of the year, however. Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS tournament gameplay will also be broadcast live on Nintendo’s Twitch channel, allowing tens of thousands to concurrently watch popular Nintendo and classic gaming characters to duke it out for ultimate supremacy.

I’ve become quite a fan, lately, of how Nintendo has marketed the new Super Smash Bros games on both the Wii U and 3DS. Not only have they brought the title directly to fans at Best Buy stores throughout the country, but are also submitting into the idea that their game may be used in tournament play at events like Evo 2014. Their direction in online play that splits into two brackets indicates this, and is quite a departure from when Nintendo pulled the plug on having the game show up at FGC events at all.

The upcoming Super Smash Bros will be released on the Nintendo 3DS on October 3, with the Wii U version coming this holiday season.
