BlueStreak Creator Explains Why He Paired With Nexon

In all honesty, when I heard that Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski was pairing with Nexon to create his next project, I was immediately turned off. Even if he aims to create a free-to-play PC arena action shooter, in the vein of a late 90’s game, with BlueStreak, it seems like such a departure from his usual work. However, he saw it differently, as explained in an “Ask Me Anything” question and answer thread on Reddit Wednesday night, even if he started off with the same reaction as I did.

More from News

"When Nexon came calling I laughed. “The f—ing Maple Story guys?!”And then I met Min Kim, president of Nexon US. And then Owen Mahoney, who runs all of Nexon. And I saw the direction they were going – Brian Reynold’s new game, Robotaki’s one, Splash Damage etc… and I spoke with all of these western devs who are working with them. They all had glowing things to say about working with Nexon. They said they just let you build the game you want to build and when the time comes to see if you can monetize they’ll help."

If you ever followed Cliffy B. on Twitter, you’d know that creative freedom is key, especially when it comes to his unconventional thoughts. Based on meeting with the regular publishers and getting quite the opposite reaction from executives there, it seems like BlueStreak may have found its perfect home.

Although the project is still very early, Cliff did provide more insight into the conceptual backing of BlueStreak, as he is “DETERMINED to not do Pay To Win.”

“Since this game is a shooter,” Cliff added, “I want that one player who likes the game and doesn’t feel like spending any money to be able to take down the trust fund kid that’s spent a ton of money to have All The Stuff.”

With the fact that Cliffy B. seems driven to create a game with his own conceptual design, avoid pay-to-win microtransactions and will take a $1/year salary until the game becomes profitable, it seems like BlueStreak looks to be a solid project. On paper. It will be interesting to look back at his remarks the closer the PC shooter is released and see if he did put his money where his mouth is.
