If you’re a software developer or someone who likes to collect really expensive webcams that can register your heartbeat and muscle movements, you can pick up the Kinect 2.0 version for Windows starting next week. According to Forbes, you can pick up the recently-Xbox-One-unbundled device, now dedicated for use with Microsoft-oriented PC devices, for $199.

Outside of D4Just Dance titles and a few others, there doesn’t seem to be a dedicated development scene for games that utilize the Kinect sensor. Don’t get me wrong, the device allows me to be the laziest gamer possible by telling my Xbox One to turn on and turn off without having to get up from my seat, but outside of practicality uses I don’t see a dedicated space for it within Microsoft’s next-gen games, especially when it takes the Kinect to be removed to be competitively priced with the PS4.

What could happen with the Kinect coming to the PC is we see a lot more of those homebrew uses and innovative applications for the device that were not originally intended. There were countless stories from late in the Xbox 360’s lifetime that included Kinect 1.0 doing things like picking out what to wear or shop for online, help improve your hand-eye coordination, creating 3D models and much more. With Kinect 2.0’s advanced hardware, who knows what the next great application of the device will be.

Kinect 2.0 for Windows will be released on July 15, and can build applications with C++, C#, VB.Net, Cx, or JavaScript. The license for Kinect for Windows SDK 2.0 will be sold separately.
