NPD May 2014: Watch Dogs Beats Out Mario Kart 8

Each month industry experts are given a report that details all of the consoles and software numbers sold from physical retail brick-and-mortar stores within the United States, which are then reported on by sites privileged with that sort of information. They are published from the NPD group.

NPD May 2014 Top 10 most sold retail software titles in the US:

  1. Watch Dogs (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
  2. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
  3. MLB 14: The Show (PS4, PS3, PS Vita)
  4. Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4, Xbox One, Xb0x 360, PS3, PC)
  5. Minecraft (Xbox 360, PS3)
  6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U)
  7. NBA 2K14 (Xbox 360, Ps4, PS3, Xb0x One, PC)
  8. Titanfall (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC)
  9. Kirby: Triple Deluxe (Nintendo 3DS)
  10. Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC, Wii U)

Additionally, the NPD May 2014 numbers suggest that overall retail sales are up 57% year over year, hardware sales are up 95% year over year and software sales are up 57% year over year.

What I find to be the biggest surprise is just how well MLB 14: The Show sold in May. Yes, the PS4 version did launch early that month, but baseball games are fairly niche titles, even among those who generally play and own sports games each year. It may have to do with the fact that the PS4 has fewer Sony-exclusive games to compete with, but that’s entirely speculation.

Congratulations must also be given out to Nintendo, who saw Mario Kart 8 come in at the number 2 spot on the NPD May 2014 list, despite being in stores for just two full days (a Friday and a Saturday).  Even though the PS4 continues to be number 1 in both US hardware and software sales for next-gen consoles, the Nintendo 3DS popping up as the second best-selling hardware system deserves recognition.
