Ubisoft Has Sold More Than 73 Million Assassin’s Creed Copies

Looks like smooth sailing ahead for Ubisoft, especially when you consider how strong their series have sold in the past. Kotaku has uncovered a great deal of statistical information about the French video game publisher/development company, including notice of updates on Ubisoft’s Facts and Figures page. Some of that info includes employee counts, indicating more than 9,200 Ubisoft team members worldwide (7,800 of whom work in video game production). GameSpot then reported that Ubisoft has sold over 73 million copies of Assassin’s Creed games, a number that is quite formidable.

What’s shocking to me is what game series came in at #2 for the company:

  • Assassin’s Creed: 73 million
  • Just Dance: 48 million
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: 30 million
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: 26 million
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: 25 million
  • Petz: 24 million
  • Rayman: 25 million
  • Imagine: 21 million
  • Prince of Persia: 20 million
  • Driver: 19 million
  • Far Cry: 18 million
  • Rayman Raving Rabbids: 14 million
  • The Settlers: 10 million
  • The Experience: 9 million
  • Anno: 5 million
  • Your Shape: 3 million

That’s right, as much as it pains me to say it, Just Dance (in less than 5 years) has brought in more success for Ubisoft than both Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and Far Cry series combined. It’s a testament to just how successful the casual gaming market has become within the console marketplace, and how Ubisoft has taken advantage of a need left unfulfilled.

No wonder Ubisoft wants to make series out of games, instead of letting them sit as a one-off title. With two teams working on Assassin’s Creed games to bring at least one new entry every year, it doesn’t look like Watch_Dogs will immediately receive that same treatment. However, if the game is as successful as they hope to market it, don’t be surprised if you see W4Tch_Dogs see release in stores by the end of the PS4 and Xbox One’s life cycles.
