Rumor: New Borderlands Game Coming To PS3/360

Via Gamespot, word is that a new Borderlands title is in the works for the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360.

The game is due out for release this fall and will take place between Borderlands 1 and 2, with the setting being on the moon of Elpis which was in Borderlands 2 and offers “a bazillion weapons” for players to hunt down monsters and loot vaults with. Being that it is on a moon, oxygen as a resource will also reportedly play a huge part in the game. Jetpacks will also reportedly be featured.

The game will feature a younger Handsome Jack, the series titular villain, and several new characters- Athena The Gladiator, Wilhelm The Enforcer, Nisha The Lawbringer, and Fragtrap–said to be a “militarized Claptrap.”

This is strictly a rumor at this point, however Borderlands developer Gearbox software has a panel at PAX East in Boston this Sunday. Though admittedly PAX is not usually where companies announce new games so if this title is indeed in development we may not get any confirmation of it’s existence until E3.

Though I haven’t played a ton of Borderlands (both games are deep in my backlog pile) I have really enjoyed what I’ve played and I’m sure the fans are pumped for more games in the series. Obviously a new game on last gen consoles at this point is a rather odd choice but I imagine a next-gen version of the series isn’t horribly far off. The only thing that does really worry me is the “oxygen as a resource” thing. I’ve really never been a fan of games that feature a mechanic of an automatically depleting resource you must constantly refill just to not die. But assuming all this is true if it’s balanced well I’m sure it will be fine.

What do you think Gamesided readers? You excited for another Borderlands tale on last gen systems or just ready to see it on next-gen? Or are you tired of the series altogether and what to see Gearbox do something new? Let us know in the comments below!
