My Girl, The Game, Is A Real Thing

As proof that just about anything can be turned into a video game, we present My Girl, the computer game. It’s based on the 1991 movie starring Macaulay Culkin and Anna Chlumsky, and it’s exceedingly faithful to the source material.

SPOILER ALERT:

Culkin’s character Thomas J. Sennett has a lot of allergies. After hitting it off with Chlumsky’s Vada Sultenfuss, he ends up getting stung by hornets and dies.

Sad, right? Well, the online game isn’t any happier. The instructions tell you to use the arrow keys or WASD to move, and the only other advice is to “Accept your fate.” You run around for a bit until you “see your fate” by the funeral parlor. You get chased by hornets, and they start to sting you. A mood ring tracks your health (the same ring that Thomas was trying to find for Vada in the movie) amid the ever-increasing swarm of hornets, and … Well, I think you can see where this is headed.

I don’t want to spoil the tear-jerking conclusion. You really need to experience My Girl for yourself.

(P.S. Dig that eight-bit version of the song “My Girl in there too.)
