Evo 2014 is just around the corner (or, almost 6 months away), and tournament organizers over at Shoryuken have announced the primary lineup for the fighting game community’s main event of the year.

List Of Confirmed Games

  • Ultra Street Fighter IV
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • Killer Instinct
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us
  • King of Fighters XIII
  • BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma

If you are like me and are alarmed at the lack of Super Smash Bros Melee included in the list, it may not be as grim as it seems. According to Evo 2014 organizers, they are working (in preliminary stages) to get some form of Smash into the tournament. While my hope is that it is because the upcoming Super Smash Bros game for the Wii U and 3DS will be released around that time, it is more likely due to Nintendo’s wishy-washy attempts to remove Super Smash Bros Melee from last year’s event.

Another notable game missing from the list is Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Seeing as Tekken has been in Evo in one form or another for quite some years, it’s interesting to see none show up at Evo 2014. Mortal Kombat 9 didn’t make it on this year’s list, either, yet the general lack of interest in the game means it’s not a shocker.

Skullgirls didn’t make the list either, but that is more understandable. Even though there is a vocal group of fans for the indie fighter, actual tournament play is barely existent in the pool of participants, and the streams don’t bring in that many viewers. Plus, Skullgirls Encore is only making it to the PS3 through the PlayStation Network tomorrow, with the Xbox 360/Live version still being worked on. Combine that with the fact that Evo 2014 will utilize Xbox consoles as primary hardware and it’s easy to see why Skullgirls was left off.

Just like last year, it’s not over yet. Later in the year we can expect fundraisers and other sorts of Evo 2014-related events to get more games into the tournament’s mix, so keep it here at GameSided as we continue down the road to Evo 2014.
