NPD October 2013: GTA V Sales Segue Us Into Next Generation Consoles

facebooktwitterreddit

Lost in all the hustle and bustle of the PS4 launch, a new Uncharted game on PS4 and The Last of Us DLC ‘Left Behind’ news was the monthly release of the consumer market report created by NPD. Each month industry experts are given a report that details all of the consoles and software numbers sold from physical retail brick-and-mortar stores, which are then reported on by sites privileged with that sort of information.

For October 2013, here are the Top 10 software titles sold:

  1. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
  2. Pokémon X (3DS)
  3. Pokémon Y (3DS)
  4. Battlefield 4 (360, PS3, PC)
  5. Batman: Arkham Origins (360, PS3, Wii U, PC)
  6. Assassin’s Creed IV, Black Flag (360, PS3, Wii U)
  7. NBA 2K14 (360, PS3, PC)
  8. Skylanders: Swap Force (Wii, 360, PS3, Wii U, 3DS)
  9. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (360, PS3, Wii U, 3DS, PC)
  10. WWE 2K14 (360, PS3)

That’s right, GTA V sold the most units this past October. However, it only sold 1.1 million units, with both Pokemon X and Y combining to sell 1.7 million together. Either way, with a PC version likely on the way several months from now (as history dictates), perhaps this won’t be the end of seeing GTA V near the top of the NPD game sales charts. That is, unless, everyone just downloads it through Steam.

The top selling gaming device sold in the US is the one and the same for the past 6 months; the Nintendo 3DS. For home consoles, unlike last month, the Xbox 360 returned to the top sold console in the country.

The biggest question on everybody’s minds for next month; which will come out as the top console sold for the fiscal NPD month of November? Yes, the PS4 has already come out and the Xbox One will be released a week later, but what will also be the top games purchased?

Top 5 November 2013 NPD predictions:

1. Call of Duty: Ghosts
2. Battlefield 4
3. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
4. NBA 2K14
5. Super Mario 3D World

Hopefully the Wii U holds on to a great deal of sales against the launch of the Xbox One, for their sakes.
