PS4 UK Releases “For The Players” Commercial, Opens Contest

We’re getting down to the wire as we approach the launches of Sony’s and Microsoft’s next-gen consoles, and marketing has only just begun to take it to a whole new level. With that in mind, Sony UK released a new commercial for UK markets called, “

For the Players.

The advert chronicles the life and times of a young lad and his friends as he grows up with his PlayStation console, transitions to the PlayStation 2, the PlayStation 3 and finally ending with the PlayStation 4. Over the span of those 18 years, the times changed. What was once a room littered with Final Fantasy VII, Crash Bandicoot, Vib Ribbon and Tekken changes to hung posters of Kasabian, magazines with Franz Ferdinand on the cover and Gran Turismo 3 and Metal Gear Solid 3 game packs on the ground as we see a Gamecube port of Resident Evil 4 being played. The landscape changes as construction builds more towers. Even the 4:3 aspect ratio changes in the switch from the PlayStation to PlayStation 2.

As time moves on, we see even more homages to the times, with posters and vinyl albums of Arctic Monkeys and an Edge Magazine with PlayStation 3 gracing the cover. LittleBigPlanet posters grace the wall as friends come together to play yet another racing game. Flash forward to the present, as our protagonists come home to the same house 18 years later (in which they must be at least in their early 30’s at this point. UK economy commentary?). UK rapper Tinie Tempah is posterized to the wall, and our commercial friends sit down to turn on the PS4 and play Killzone Shadow Fall, with games Knack and Drive Club on the floor. This must be the future, as Drive Club is currently postponed until at least Spring 2014.

If anything, this commercial speaks not only to the UK audience who are familiar with the history and nostalgia of playing former Sony consoles and listening to those specific bands at the height of their popularity, but to international fans abroad as well. UK fans also have a chance to win a PS4 on their website if they correctly guess in which order the hidden X, Square, Triangle and O symbols are placed in the video.

Check out the video for yourself; it’s remarkably well done. We’ll be on the lookout for Xbox One’s answer; they have a history of great commercials, themselves.

The PlayStation 4 will launch in the EU on November 29th, here in North America on November 15th, in Asia this December and in Japan on February 22nd, 2014.
