20. Knights of Pen & Paper

Okay, maybe I fudged things a bit right off the bat. “Knights of Pen and Paper” may not have the widespread notoriety of any of the games above it, but it should. It’s both a celebration and a send-up of old school RPG conventions, lovingly set to retro graphics and music. The storyline is great (especially the expanded one in the “+1 Edition”), there are tons of side quests to complete, and the humor is fantastic.

It’s also amazing that so many spot on American pop culture references are included in a title made by a small indie studio in Brazil. It just goes to show you that geek culture is universal, and this game really gets that.
